DIY Tomato Cage Plant Stands

diy

These DIY plant stands are my absolute favorite. They look great, and at just five dollars each, they’re super affordable. Chris had to stop me from adding all our floor plants to one of these stands.

For my first magic trick, flip the tomato cage upside down and cut the metal legs off. Boom, YOU ARE DONE. Then place your pot into the top ring and admire that five-dollar beauty. For a shorter plant stand, or one that accommodates a larger pot, you can cut the cage down to two rings. You can find colored tomato cages at lots of stores. I found these black ones at my local nursery and couldn’t be more in love!

Disclaimer: Chris saw me struggling to cut my cages and had his power grinder handy, so he just quickly took them off for me. But this can be done with some good wire cutters and a little muscle.

If you want to add some flair to your tomato cage plant stands, all you need is some macramé cord. I used outdoor macramé cord because I wasn’t sure if I was going to place this stand inside or outdoors. I had some super cute colors on hand from another project I’m working on with my crafty sis-in-law, Sheila.

Step 1: Flip the cage over and remove the rods with wire cutters or a grinder.

Step 2: Pick your design. I used four colors – one for each ring and a different color for the rest of the cage. One color for the whole stand would be super cute too!

Step 3: Start knotting. Tie an overhand knot, leaving a two-inch tail to secure the cord to the cage. Your “holding cord” is the metal cage. Cover all metal with spiral knots.

 Spiral Knot How-to:

Create a backwards 4 over the top of the metal, wrap cord around the metal, then pull tail through and up. Repeat.

Tip: If the cord doesn’t spiral, you can spiral it with your fingers.

Check out this YouTube (www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pFvziXuREo) for more guidance on to how to do a spiral knot.

These tomato cage plant stands are one of my most prized DIYs. They are so cute, and people are shocked when they realize they are tomato cages!
