DIY Fairy + Butterfly Wings

DIY cardboard wings

Once again, big fan of repurposing all our cardboard before we toss it!  Before we had kids, I was the person that waited till the week of halloween to come up with a ground breaking costume. Since I have a family I can force to match me, WE PLAN now. This year is going to be epic, so keep your eyes out!

So if you’re the person that throws together at the last minute like I used to, this is a great EASY item to throw on any outfit and BOOM you have cute butterfly or fairy!

When I saw this box, I knew it was going to be perfect for a set a wings.

Quinn’s favorite form of art is painting right now! We paint cardboard all day around here! Last week I let her go to town on this cardboard to spruce it up! This could really be as cool or basic as you want! While typing this wish I had added a lot more flair!

You’ll need:

-Large piece of cardboard

-Paint, markers, crayons (whatever you want to use to add some character to wings)

-Elastic or string/yarn/anything to make loops for your kids arm to fit thru

-Scissors (Box cutters are easier if your cardboard is thick)

-Duct tape to attach the elastic/string

Let’s get started!

  1. Have your kid decorate the cardboard to their liking, go crazy! The more the better!

  2. Once the cardboard is designed the way you want, draw the shape of wings that you want! You’re going to cut on the inside of your line so you don’t see the line.

  3. Cut out the wings

  4. With 3 feet of elastic make a large loop and tie a knot.

  5. Place the large loop over the back of the wings with the knot in the middle, pinch in the middle to make two arm holes. The elastic should look like a figure 8.

  6. Duct tape the middle of your figure 8 to the cardboard.

  7. YOU’RE DONE + your kid is stoked!

Quinn loves these so much! She throws a fit when it’s time to take them off. These wings are instantly the new favorite accessory.
